these are simple flashcard like boards for learning arabic. I never pose people... they just sort of grouped in front of me like this while I was wandering around.
the kid on the right is holding second half of alphabet and the other kid on the left is holding the first set of alphabet. beautiful work.

It says, "Yankee go home, and stop stealing our souls!!" Just kidding. These are letters of the arabic alphabet. Now why are Chinese interested in learning the Arabic alphabet? Are they Muslim?

Islam spread throughout China during the Ming dynasty which was tolerant of many religions (the Christians came at this time too). China has about 200 million Muslims. About 20-30% of those actually practice the religion. All considered 'ethnic Muslims' and are parts of various minority groups (Hui, Uyghur, Kazakh, Kyrgyz, Uzbek, Tartar, Salars, Bao'an, Dongxiang, Tajik are the main ones) . These are Hui Muslims part of the largest group. This Madrasa is in Linxia which is known as little Mecca and features hundreds of mosques.

Raul,
This is a very good picture. Composition, depth of field, the colors and faces work together very well.
And the story behind is very interesting!
Merry Christmas to you,
Martin
