About Raul Gutierrez
I grew up in a place and time where, after a journey, neighbors would invite you to slideshows. Families tended to have their themes. The Sullivans were always going to Vegas. The Perkins preferred Civil War battlefields. Mr. Hunter traveled once a year to Africa in search of big game (he would roll out his trophies into the light of the projector at the end of the night).
We often visited family in Mexico, so our house was the home of "Mexican Pictures." As we got older, I took over the slideshows, sometimes also running super-8 movies, or curating a selection of my dad's old slides from Vietnam. I don't know how the other kids felt about this, but I loved it.
So: welcome to Mexican Pictures, my slideshow. Rather than a curated portfolio, I think of these projects as travelogues. I'm looking for way stations between cultures, places where you can see the past and the future at the same time.
About Me
In everyday life I run the children's science app company, Tinybop and an AI image platform called PictureStudio.. The latter might be surprising for someone who mainly shoots film, but image making is my jam and I love exploring this new realm.
More of my photography and thoughts on visual culture can be found at Heading East.
